My name is Gene and I’m approaching my silver anniversary with south Central Transit! In May I will have been a client with South Central Transit for 25 years! I have had Cerebral Palsy since birth and I am legally blind. As a young man I walked to school everyday as my father began his work day at a very early hour delivering bread.
After graduating from Centralia High School I attended 2 years at Kaskaskia College and was in the first class ever offered at KC’s current location. I then went on to study at SIU Carbondale where I graduated with my degree in journalism and was the first person with a disability to do so.
In 1992 I began using SCT for transportation to visit my father at the nursing home and I have been riding with them ever since. I use SCT to go to the barber shop, doctor’s appointments, and to go out to eat. Since 2005 I have been riding two times each week to the meal program at Calumet Street Christian Church.
Having been a client for 25 years I feel I’ve experienced the growth and positive changes of this organization. I have never been able to drive so having friends, neighbors and relatives to help with transportation is appreciated but I am also grateful to have South Central Transit available to me as well.
